L. Linkevičius: EU has to be more active in the field of human rights
On 9 December in Brussels, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius attended the Foreign Affairs Council, which focused on human rights issues and the EU-Africa relationship.
The Council discussed the promotion and protection of human rights in the world, ahead of the Human Rights Day.
“We support the adoption of an EU human rights sanctions regime, which enables the EU to contribute more effectively to the fight against impunity, thus ensuring a safer environment for human rights defenders and journalists”, said the Minister L. Linkevičius. He also expressed his concern about human rights violations in many countries, particularly in Russia.
According to the nongovernmental organization “Memorial”, the number of political prisoners in Russia has grown several times and now exceeds 300.
Foreign ministers also discussed the EU-Africa relationship in preparation for ministerial and summit-level meetings between the EU and the African Union in 2020. A debate on a new comprehensive strategy for Africa also took place at the Council meeting.
