Today, on 1 June, in Oslo, Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Gabrielius Landsbergis attended an informal meeting of NATO Ministers of Foreign Affairs.

“For 14 years, Ukraine has waited for an answer from NATO. It has endured two invasions by that time. I think it is high time we sat down and found a concrete answer as to how Ukraine will move closer to NATO and become a member of the Alliance,” the head of Lithuania’s diplomacy said.

“The second topic is the defence of the eastern flank. The situation is not improving, especially if somebody thinks Russia is stuck in Ukraine and no longer poses a threat. We don’t see it that way. Russia can rebuild, restructure, and maybe even innovate. And there is an additional factor of Belarus. It was Russia’s accomplice in the war. So we consider it a growing threat. Therefore, it has to be addressed, and the only way to address it is with the stronger posture by the Alliance on the eastern flank,” the head of Lithuania’s diplomacy said in discussion with NATO ministers.

The informal meeting of NATO Ministers of Foreign Affairs in Oslo focused on the agenda of NATO’s summit in Vilnius.

“The open discussion that took place in Oslo is a crucial and necessary step in finding a consensus among the members of the Alliance,” Landsbergis said after the meeting.
